Ruins of Mississippi and Other PlacesI have been going to the Mississippi Gulf Coast for family reunions and summer vacations since I was a child. As I became older I often drove along the water from Ocean Springs to Bay St Louis and I believed it to be one of the most beautiful drives to be found anywhere. But when I arrived on the Coast after Hurricane Katrina the devastation was so complete I could not find the usual landmarks. The motels where I had stayed, the restaurants where I had eaten and the beautiful nineteenth century homes that had faced the Gulf were completely and utterly destroyed. For the first time in my life I couldn't pick up my camera. It sat beside me on the car seat for several hours. Finally I began to understand what I was seeing. Here was a ruin as surely as the ones to be found in Athens, Rome, Mombasa, Oaxaca, Chaco Canyon, Rajasthan, Aphrodisias and other places in the world. That is when and how this series began. |
