Garden in the CourtA private commission in Seattle presented a unique opportunity to take an unused, dilapidated, seventy five year old tennis court and convert it into a sculpture garden. The basic layout of the tennis court was preserved and native plants were allowed to survive in the fissures of the concrete. Sections of the old court were removed to accommodate roses, wisteria and other plantings. The lighted glass and metal columns are based on an outdoor alter I saw in Rome. The photographs, etched on glass, were taken in gardens in Ninfa, Beijing and Memphis. A wisteria grows through a fourth column to spread onto a horizontal trellis. Two benches, a small rock garden and a second trellis complete the installation. |
